Open actions menu
Command + K (Mac); Ctrl + K (Windows)

Search Figma Design actions and commands by name. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

Insert component from library
Shift + I (Mac and Windows)

Opens quick insert so you can search available components. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

Switch to Assets
Option + 2 (Mac); Alt + 2 (Windows)

Select the Assets panel to find reusable components. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

Open keyboard layout settings
Help / Keyboard shortcuts → Layout

Select supported key mapping if not using the default US layout. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

Find main component from instance
Right-click instance → Go to main component

Navigate to the source component for an instance. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

See local shortcuts
Actions → Keyboard shortcuts

Inspect current shortcuts instead of assuming they never change. [1][2][3][5][8][6]

Choose auto layout structure

Horizontal auto layout
Auto layout → Horizontal

Children flow from left to right along one axis. [1][7]

Vertical auto layout
Auto layout → Vertical

Children stack top to bottom and reflow when reordered. [1][7]

Grid auto layout
Auto layout → Grid

Arrange children in rows and columns with track controls. [1][7]

Nested auto layout
Put a vertical frame inside a horizontal frame

Combine navigation, labels and repeated cards with independent sizing. [1][7]

Gap between children
Auto layout → Gap

Controls interior spacing between sibling layers. [1][7]

Horizontal padding
Auto layout → Left / Right padding

Space the first and last child away from the frame border. [1][7]

Vertical padding
Auto layout → Top / Bottom padding

Separate stacked children from frame boundaries. [1][7]

Alignment control
Auto layout → Alignment

Choose the cross-axis and main-axis positioning within the frame. [1][7]

Packed arrangement
Spacing mode → Packed

Preserve explicit gaps between successive layers in a group. [1][7]

Space between distribution
Spacing mode → Space between

Distributes free room between sibling layers on the main axis. [1][7]

Absolute-positioned child
Layer positioning → Ignore auto layout

Place an overlapping badge or decoration without affecting flow. [1][7]

Auto layout for a button
Text layer → Shift + A → add padding

Lets the button background grow as its label changes. [1][7]

Auto layout for a card
Frame → Vertical; gap and padding

Builds stacked text and images that adapt to edited content. [1][7]

Auto layout for navigation
Frame → Horizontal; adjust gap

Keeps navigation items aligned and evenly arranged. [1][7]

Responsive resizing choices

Hug contents
Resizing → Hug contents

Parent frame resizes around its children on the selected axis. [1][7]

Fill container
Child resizing → Fill container

Occupies available width or height within an auto layout parent. [1][7]

Fixed width
Resizing → Fixed width

Keeps the layer's width constant despite surrounding changes. [1][7]

Fixed height
Resizing → Fixed height

Keeps height unchanged when siblings reflow. [1][7]

Min width
Resizing → Minimum width

Prevents a responsive element from shrinking below a defined lower bound. [1][7]

Max width
Resizing → Maximum width

Prevents overly wide content at large parent sizes. [1][7]

Min height
Resizing → Minimum height

Preserves a minimum height even with short contents. [1][7]

Max height
Resizing → Maximum height

Caps the height of a responsive element. [1][7]

Hug via canvas edge
Double-click an auto layout frame edge

Selects Hug contents along that dimension. [1][7]

Fill via canvas edge
Option / Alt + double-click a frame edge

Sets Fill container for an eligible child dimension. [1][7]

Fixed-sized icon
Icon width and height → Fixed

Keeps icons stable while text or buttons grow around them. [1][7]

Responsive text layer
Text width → Fill container

Allows text to wrap when the outer frame narrows. [1][7]

Text label that should not wrap
Text layer → use its width behavior intentionally

Fixed or truncation decisions control wrapping; test narrow sizes. [1][7]

Prevent overgrown desktop content
Frame → Max width; Width Fill container

Bounds a fluid section at wide breakpoints. [1][7]

Components, variants and checks

Turn a button into component
Select button layers → Create component

Reuse its styling while editing main component centrally. [3][4][8][2]

Add a hover variant
Main component → Add variant

Create a state variant within a component set. [3][4][8][2]

Group related variants
Combine as variants

Keep similar component states inside one component set. [3][4][8][2]

Name variant properties
Property = State; values = Default / Hover

Clear names let instance users select the intended configuration. [3][4][8][2]

Configure instance
Select instance → right panel variant property

Switch to another supported component variant. [3][4][8][2]

Duplicate an instance
Command + D / Ctrl + D

Another instance stays linked to its main component. [3][4][8][2]

Maintain component documentation
Add description / link to component

Provide purpose and usage notes for colleagues. [3][4][8][2]

Select a frame preset
Frame tool → choose device/paper preset

Start with named dimensions rather than arbitrary bounds. [3][4][8][2]

Rename nested layers
Layers panel → meaningful labels

Descriptive naming makes inherited layouts understandable. [3][4][8][2]

Inspect frame hierarchy
Layers panel → parent versus child nesting

Moving a layer to the wrong parent changes its layout behavior. [3][4][8][2]

Preserve image ratio
Image → Aspect ratio setting

Helps media scale without unintended distortion. [3][4][8][2]

Check narrow viewport
Resize parent frame to mobile width

Watch for overflowing text or broken padding. [3][4][8][2]

Check long localized labels
Replace placeholder with longer copy

Tests whether Hug/Fill and wrapping respond correctly. [3][4][8][2]

Check component state coverage
Default, hover, pressed, disabled as applicable

Confirm states remain readable and consistently named. [3][4][8][2]

Reserved placement, separate from reference controls. No ad network is active.
