Read the five fields

Five field order
minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week

All five time fields precede the command in user crontabs. [1]

Minute domain
0–59

Enter an integer within the specified minute range. [1]

Hour domain
0–23

Uses 24-hour clock for the local configured zone. [1]

Day-of-month domain
1–31

A requested 31st day never exists in shorter months. [1]

Month domain
1–12

Name aliases jan to dec are supported by Cronie. [1]

Day-of-week domain
0–7

Sunday may be represented as zero or seven. [1]

Wildcard
*

Matches all legal values in the selected field. [1]

Inclusive range
3-6

Matches all integers three, four, five and six. [1]

Value list
1,3,5

Matches exactly the listed values. [1]

Step over a field
*/10

Selects multiples of ten within the particular field. [1]

Step over range
9-17/2

Matches 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. [1]

Day match semantics
0 9 1 * 1

First of the month OR every Monday; not only Monday the first. [1]

Named weekday
0 10 * * MON

Three-letter weekday names are accepted in Cronie. [1]

Named month
0 10 * JAN *

Cronie can parse three-letter month names. [1]

Cron execution and safety

Check user's crontab
crontab -l

Lists the effective user's scheduled jobs. [1]

Edit user's crontab
crontab -e

Opens the crontab editor; changes can schedule commands. [1]

Validate a cron file
crontab -T ./candidate.cron

Cronie-specific syntax validation without installing the file. [1]

Never run as root by default
crontab -e

Keep job privileges as low as required. [1]

Set predictable PATH
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin

Cron often has a smaller environment than interactive terminals. [1]

Choose interpreter explicitly
SHELL=/bin/sh

Use a known shell and avoid relying on login setup. [1]

Set a time zone (Cronie)
CRON_TZ=UTC

Cronie supports per-crontab time zone for interpreting schedules. [1]

Forward logs intentionally
/usr/local/bin/task >> /var/log/task.log 2>&1

Shell redirection can capture output; permissions and rotation are required. [1]

Use absolute script path
/home/user/bin/task

Avoid commands that depend on the working directory or user's shell PATH. [1]

Escaped percent character
\%

In many crontabs a raw percent in the command has special newline/stdin meaning. [1]

Handle daylight-saving change
30 2 * * *

Local 02:30 may be skipped on spring transition or duplicated on fall transition. [1]

Avoid overlap
Use a lock in the invoked script

Cron starts jobs by schedule, not by verifying the previous execution ended. [1]

Review comments
# Nightly job

Comment lines start with #; avoid inline comments in command fields. [1]

System cron account
user field in /etc/crontab

System crontabs require an extra username; user crontabs do not. [1]

Reserved placement, separate from reference controls. No ad network is active.
